HOW TO CHOOSE AN ONLINE SPS CORAL VENDOR

Eight questions every buyer should ask before placing a premium SPS order, plus an honest side-by-side of the leading online vendors โ€” REEF JASE, World Wide Corals, Top Shelf Aquatics, Battlecorals, and Cherry Corals.

FULL DISCLOSURE: This page is published by REEF JASE. We have tried to describe each vendor by their stable business model, not their pricing or current inventory โ€” both shift constantly. If you operate one of these businesses and want a correction, email jase@reefjase.com and we will update.

8 QUESTIONS TO ASK BEFORE YOU BUY

Is the listing WYSIWYG or a stock photo?
A WYSIWYG ("what you see is what you get") listing means the exact piece in the photo is the exact piece shipped. Stock photo / representative listings mean you are buying a species, not a specimen. For premium SPS where coloration varies piece-to-piece, this is the single most important question.
How long has the coral been in the vendor's system?
Freshly imported coral is in shock and weeks away from showing its real color or stability. Tank-conditioned coral โ€” held in the vendor's system for 2+ weeks before listing โ€” ships healthier and recovers faster. Ask. If the vendor cannot answer, assume it is fresh.
What is the live arrival guarantee window?
Industry standard is 24โ€“72 hours from delivery, with photo evidence required. Shorter windows or photo-less policies favor the vendor; longer windows or replacement-vs-credit options favor the buyer. Read the terms before you order.
Are the photos taken under reef lighting and white-balanced, or saturation-boosted?
Honest vendors shoot under blue-heavy reef spectrum and white-balance for accuracy. Cranked-saturation photos set you up to feel disappointed on arrival. Look for consistent lighting across a vendor's listings as a signal of honest photography.
Who answers customer service emails?
For premium SPS, the operator answering your email should be a person who actually handles your coral, not a tier-one ticket handler. Test this before you spend $300+ โ€” send a pre-purchase question and see who responds and how fast.
What is the shipping cutoff, carrier, and weather policy?
FedEx Priority Overnight with a published cutoff time and an active weather hold policy is the standard for premium live coral. Vendors who ship through extreme heat or cold "because the order is paid" are externalizing risk onto you.
Does the vendor restock named pieces, or is every listing one-of-a-kind?
Some vendors restock named or branded corals from a maintained mother colony โ€” fine if disclosed. WYSIWYG-only vendors list each cut as a unique specimen with its own ID and never relist. This affects how you value scarcity in your purchase.
Where do other buyers actually talk about this vendor?
Check r/ReefTank, Reef2Reef vendor reviews, and YouTube unboxings โ€” not the vendor's own testimonial page. Look for patterns across many buyers, not single dramatic reviews. A vendor with zero independent footprint is a higher risk than one with a long thread of mixed-but-recovered experiences.

  • You want a single order with corals, fish, dry goods, and equipment โ€” we do not sell anything but coral.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

Is REEF JASE worth the premium over a high-volume retailer?
For commodity LPS or beginner SPS, a high-volume retailer with stock photos is often the better economic choice. For premium SPS in the $100-500 range where coloration varies piece-to-piece, a WYSIWYG, tank-conditioned vendor like REEF JASE protects your investment โ€” plus the catalog refreshes weekly with new one-of-a-kind cuts.
How does WYSIWYG-only compare to mixed-listing vendors like WWC?
WYSIWYG-only means every listing is the exact piece, photographed individually, gone when sold. Mixed vendors offer both WYSIWYG and representative photos โ€” wider raw catalog, but you have to read each listing to know which. REEF JASE is unique-only: every listing is a new cut, no stock photos to decipher.
How does REEF JASE compare to Battlecorals on rare Acros?
Battlecorals is narrow and deep โ€” primarily aquacultured high-end Acropora at premium prices. REEF JASE is built for variety: SPS anchors, but we constantly list LPS, rare softies, chalices, zoas, and one-offs. Want a named aquacultured Acro? Battlecorals. Want a broad rotation of new cuts weekly across the whole hobby? REEF JASE.
What makes REEF JASE different from every other boutique on this list?
Variety, refresh cadence, and operator access. Most boutiques lean into a single category and run drop schedules. REEF JASE lists continuously across SPS, LPS, chalices, zoas, and rarities โ€” the catalog today is materially different from seven days from now. Every piece is WYSIWYG, pest-free, and you email the owner directly.
Do any vendors guarantee specific coral coloration after color-up?
No reputable vendor can. Color-up depends on your lighting spectrum, alkalinity stability, nutrient levels, and flow โ€” variables the vendor cannot control. A good vendor can guarantee the shipped piece matches the listing photo at packing and arrives alive. Anything beyond that is on your husbandry.
How often should I re-check vendor comparisons before buying?
Inventory and policies shift constantly. Use this comparison as a starting framework, then verify guarantee terms, shipping cutoffs, and current pricing on each vendor's own site before placing an order over $200. The 8 questions above are durable; specific facts may change month to month.
